What is Leuza Carthamodies?
Leuzea carthamoides (also called Rhaponticum carthamoides) leuzeais a rare endemic plant belonging to the Composite family. It is a big herbal perennial, reaching 130 cm in height. Leuzea grows on the mountain slopes in a limited area of southern Siberia (Altai, Sayani).
This plant derives its traditional name Maral root (Maralu) from the maral deer who fed on it.
The history of Leuzea as a medicinal plant began ages ago when local hunters watched the behavior of a variety of deer known as Marals. At the time of mating, when males fight each other and need to restore their strength, stags dig out and eat Leuzea root. Local healers discovered that consumption of dried Leuzea root by man also helped him recover from fatigue and increase his sexual potency.
Adaptogens were discovered in 1947 by the Russian scientist Dr. Nicolai Lazarev, who in fact coined the name «adaptogen». Dr. Lazarev was also the mentor of Dr. I. Brakeman, who conducted extensive research on adaptogenic herbs. Dr Brakeman’s first major focus was the now well known Panax Ginseng, also called Korean or Chinese Ginseng. This worked, but unfortunately it has a few drawbacks that have since become evident. It sometimes has side effects such as causing over-excitement or constipation, and when taken it can be too heating and stimulating to some people. Dr. Brakeman soon moved on to other herbs and became recognised as the world’s leading expert on adaptogens. Chemical constituents of Beta ecdysterone -Leuza Carthamodies Extract
The principal constituents of the whole plant are ecdysteroids (5 beta-cholest-6-on-7-ene derivatives) and flavonoids. Also polyacetylenes and triterpenes have been isolated from different parts of the plant (Girault et. al. 1984, Szendrei et. al. 1984, Varga et al. 1986 and 1990). Of the isolated compounds, only 20-β-Hydroxyecdysterone is currently considered to play an important role in the action of this plant. (Syrov and Kurmukov 1976). The main flavonoides are 6-methoxy-kampferol, patuletin, isorhamnetin-glycoside and quercetin-5-glycoside. All leaf and root samples contained 20-hydroxyecdysone as a main compound of Leuzea. The 20-β-Hydroxyecdysterone of the roots ranged from 0.12 to 0.20%, being higher than that of the leaves.
Function of 20-β-Hydroxyecdysterone:
During the human organism adaptive response to stress factors, the role of ecdysterone consists primarily of the activation of a synthesis of various proteins. For instance , repeated physical stress of muscles triggers an adaptive synthesis of oxidative enzymes and the formation of contractile proteins in muscle cells and the growth of new muscle capillaries. This occurs with the participation of testosterone — it is this hormone which activates the genes controlling protein synthesis. During exhaustive physical exercise, the testosterone concentration in the blood stream drops. Ecdysterone can then become an effective substitute for the missing testosterone, displaying its anabolic activity and promoting the adaptation to physical stress.

In doses up to 40 mg/kg the extract was non-toxic. In certain doses in mice and rats Leuzea carthamoides exerted a moderate central stimulation action, increased ambulating and rearing, increased central nervous excitability and improved learning and memory without any pronounced side-effects (Petkov 1984).
