What is Black Currant?
Black Currant is a small perennial shrub, a species of the Ribes berry that grows in the central and northern part of Europe. It has a characteristic aroma due to which it can be distinguished from the other currant berries. This shrub is also known for the French “cassis” that it has. The black currant berries are dark purple in color. It is an edible berry, and it grows to a height of about two meters high in the woody branches. It is known as “Munakka” in Hindi.
Black currant is a natural remedy said to offer a variety of health benefits. Sourced from Ribes nigrum (a plant native to parts of Europe and Asia), black currant extract is typically derived from black currant fruit or from the oil of black currant seeds. Black currant extracts are widely available in dietary supplement form.
Chemical constituents of Black Currant extract
The fruit has very high vitamin C content (several times the recommended daily dietary reference intake per 100 g), good levels of potassium, phosphorus, iron, manganese and vitamin B5, and a broad range of other essential nutrients.
Other phytochemicals in the fruit (polyphenols/anthocyanins) have been demonstrated in laboratory experiments with potential to inhibit inflammation mechanisms suspected to be at the origin of heart disease, cancer, microbial infections or neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.Major anthocyanins in blackcurrant pomace are delphinidin-3-O-glucoside, delphinidin-3-O-rutinoside, cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, and cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside which are retained in the juice concentrate among other yet unidentified polyphenols.
Blackcurrant seed oil is also rich in many nutrients, especially vitamin E and several unsaturated fatty acids including alpha-linolenic acid and gamma-linolenic acid.There is some evidence that gamma-linolenic acid may boost the effectiveness of the immune system and that use of the oil can reduce total cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing beneficial high-density cholesterol. In a human pilot study, ingestion of blackcurrant seed oil by mothers reduced atopic dermatitis in their breast-fed newborns who were supplemented with the oil over a period of two years.
In one study in vitro, blackcurrant juice was found to have high antioxidant content and be a potent free radical scavenger and chelator of iron.

black currant may interfere with blood clotting. Given this safety concern, it’s important for people with bleeding disorders to take caution when consuming black currant extract. In addition, use of black currant extract should be avoided prior to undergoing surgery.

According to the experiment shows that: a man of about 70 kg even for six months a daily dose of 35000 mg of anthocyanins found no adverse reactions.
