Ginseng grows wild in several regions of East Asia: Manchuria, China, Japan, Korea. The plant thrives in dark, moist, wooded and elevated places. It is usually found on the edges of ravines and rocks. The root is the part of the ginseng plant that is used; it is extremely hard and dense, and never spongy. As a medicinal plant, ginseng has the oldest and most respected reputation. It has been part of the traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia for over 2,000 years. This is the most famous plant among adaptogens. The genus name Panax comes from the Greek words Pan, meaning "all," and Akos, which translates as "medicine."
