Description
Spotted milk thistle is a biennial herbaceous plant common in Southern Europe and North Africa. Now it is also widely cultivated. It has large glossy green leaves and purple tubular flowers surrounded by spiny bracts. Milk thistle was known to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who used it to treat liver and bile diseases. Pliny recommended drinking milk thistle juice with a small amount of honey to remove excess bile. Its leaves, flowers, and roots were historically considered a vegetable in the European diet, and its fruit (achenes), which resemble seeds, were roasted for use as a coffee substitute. The plant is also part of TCM and is known as Shui Fei Ji. The plant is still used today as an antidote for fly agaric poisoning and to protect the liver and kidneys from toxic drugs.
