Description
Padina pavonica is a small brown algae that grows in moderately warm waters and is found in the Mediterranean, Black, Red, Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Padina pavonica is morphologically characterized by the presence of limestone-whitened layers (leaves or umbrellas). This algae participates in underwater chlorophyll photosynthesis and absorbs minerals from the water, then deposits calcium carbonate crystals on its thallus, the largest of any algae. Therefore, it is called "calcifying" or calcified algae. Padina pavonica is used to treat bone diseases such as osteoporosis and arthritis, and in calcium-based dietary supplements. It is used in pharmacy and cosmetics, as it promotes the renewal of glycosaminoglycans, strengthens their protective effect and the effect of supporting the viability of cells.
