Prickly pear cacti are so important in Mexican history that they appear on the national flag. Cultivation is believed to have started around 5,000 years ago. Before the arrival of Christopher Columbus, prickly pear, along with corn, was one of the main foods of the Indians. Paddock extract is traditionally used as a poultice to soothe skin inflammation and insect bites, especially tarantulas. Holy Roman Emperor Charles V is said to have been cured of a serious illness within weeks by applying nopal to his ulcers. The juice of the pad is also said to help stimulate hair growth.
